Small numbers of similar cups have survived together, suggesting some at least were sold in sets, probably for use as 'cappuchine' coffee cups which would have been passed around on a silver tray. It is equally likely that cups as fine as this example would have been sold individually as cabinet pieces, to be enjoyed for their sheer novelty and for the quality of the casting and decoration. A similar example from the Zorensky Collection is illustrated by John Sandon and Simon Spero, Worcester Porcelain, 1996, p.83, no.28 and was sold by Bonhams on 23 February 2005, lot 6. Another from the Barbara Leake Collection was sold by Bonhams on 12 March 2008, lot 165.
