In his 2008 catalogue Simon Spero highlights the sensitive modelling of this group, which expresses tenderness and maternal affection. Chemical analysis undertaken in 2011 confirmed that the composition is consistent with 'Dry Edge' Derby, see Peter White, 2014, pp.168-73. Another white version is illustrated together with its billy goat companion by Peter Bradshaw, Derby Porcelain Figures, 1990, pp.34-5, no.B6. See also the pair sold by Christie's New York on 23 October 2003, lot 297. For the companion model of a billy goat, see lot 111 in this sale.
