Of exuberant rococo press-moulded form with trellis and scroll borders, a similar design repeated in miniature around the cavetti, the centres with a complex basketweave pattern, picked out in bright colours and gilding, 25.5cm diam, together with a saltglaze stoneware example with pierced borders, 26.8cm diam (2)

The influence of Staffordshire saltglazed stoneware is clearly seen in this very rare moulded shape which is likely to have been cast from a Staffordshire mould. Mary White illustrates this Vauxhall plate alongside another similar white saltglaze stoneware plate, but the example accompanying it in the present lot is a more exact match. Related shapes were also made at Worcester at this time. For a Vauxhall mug with decoration which may be influenced by saltglaze stoneware, see lot 79 in this sale.
