Copied from Meissen, melon tureens such as this were made at Chelsea in two sizes, of which this is the largest. Simon Spero notes that these were among the most successful tromp l'oeil devised for the dessert. The 1755 Chelsea sale catalogue lists 'Two fine cabbage leaves and two fine large melons for desart', First Day's Sale, 10 March 1755, lot 38. Mary White illustrates the present lot alongside a leaf stand for the smaller size of melon tureen. Another melon tureen is illustrated by Rosalie Wise Sharp, China to Light up a House, Vol.1, 2015, p.95.
