Footnotes
Heo Baek-ryun (also spelled Baekryeon) was a descendant of the Heo Ryeon (1808–1893), Baek-ryun learned painting from Heo Ryeon's son Heo Hyeong (1862–1938). He then went to Japan to study, and in 1917 he became a disciple of Komuro Suiun (1874–1945). After returning to Korea in 1920, Heo received consecutive honorable mentions at the early edition of the Joseon Art Exhibition (Joseon misul jeollamhoe). In Gwangju, he created works in the literati painting tradition of the Southern School of Painting and founded an organization named Yeonjinhoe to train young people in calligraphy and painting.
