Anton Gabszewicz discusses this early group of porcelains and illustrates a very similar tureen from the Freeman Collection, see 'Bow Porcelain The Incised 'R' marked group and associated wares', ECC Trans, Vol.17, Pt.2, 2000, pp.284, fig.29. The form takes inspiration from silver, especially the handles and mask terminals with radiating scroll moulding. The Imari decoration is ultimately taken from Japanese porcelain. The gilt highlights would have replicated some of the splendour of a silver example, especially in candlelight, which would have also emphasised the crisp modelling of the handles left in the white.
Probably intended to serve soup, it has been suggested that this large covered form might have been used for punch.
