This charming model belongs to a distinct and short-lived class of early white porcelain first identified by Bernard Watney, 'A Hare, A Ram, Two Putti and Associated Figures', ECC Trans, Vol.8, Pt.2, 1972, pp. 224-7, where an identical model of a pug in the Victoria and Albert Museum is illustrated, pl.181(d). The greyish glassy glaze and bulging eyes seen here are characteristic, and Mary White illustrates the present model beside another from the slightly later 'Dry Edge' period which is creamier in colour. Watney suggested that this group may be experimental early Derby and chemical undertaken in 2011 has confirmed that the composition is indeed consistent with this, see Peter White, 2014, pp. 168-70. For other early Derby figures from the Peter and Mary White Collection which belong to this interesting class of porcelain, see the figures of Harlequin and Kitty Clive sold by Bonhams on 1 December 2025, lots 139 and 149 respectively, and two figures of musicians, lots 57 and 58 in this sale. Compare also to the model of two birds dated 1751, lot 185 in this sale.
