Bernard Watney illustrates two similar figures with polychrome decoration in a short paper where he discusses the design source, likely an engraving of a marble figure of Ceres in the Galleria del Candelabri at the Vatican, see 'Two, or possibly three, Origins of Design', ECC Trans, Vol.14, Pt.2, 1991, p.168. At the time, the figure was thought to be by Liverpool potter Richard Chaffers. Watney illustrates another version left in the white, see Liverpool Porcelain, 1997, p.117, fig.465 alongside a related figure of Ariadne or Cleopatra reclining at fig.464.
More recently, Errol Manners has made a case for this class of steatitic figures belonging to the short-lived venture of John Bolton, in Kentish Town, see 'A group of London Porcelains in search of a home: the case for Kentish Town', , Vol.29, 2018, 217-224. Manners illustrates the figure of Ariadne or Cleopatra at fig.2. Both figures share heavily modelled drapery. Moreover, they bear the signs of firing difficulties, with tears appearing in the porcelain body, which would seem to support the theory that these were produced by a factory in its infancy.
