The standard vase perseval is typically characterised by a more angular profile, as evidenced by a drawing dated 1755 preserved in the Sèvres archives. The more rounded form represented by the present example is regarded as an alternative version of the model (see . Préaud/A. Fay-Hallé, Porcelaines de Vincennes, Les Origines de Sèvres, 1977, pp. 145-146). Examples of the model are recorded as early October 1752, while a second size entered production in December 1753, followed by a third size in 1754, which appears in the January 1755 inventory.
The name of the model derives from Philibert de Parseval, who was one of the first shareholders during the early period of the Vincennes manufactory but sold his shares in 1750 (T. Prèaud/A. d'Albis, , 1991, p. 128, cat. no. 58).
The pair to the present lot was sold at Sotheby's London, 13 April 2006, lot 66.
