The present lot was sold at auction in 2015 as part of a small collection of similar porcelain and two portraits depicting Joseph Sikes (1714-1798) and his wife Jane (died 1773) which had descended through the family to the then owner. Mary White illustrates it alongside another similar group of birds with the same provenance. The greyish tint, bulging eyes and strawberry-type leaves on the bases are characteristics distinctive of a short-lived class of early white Derby porcelain discussed in detail by Peter White, 'Two distinct early Derby white groups of figures and some quandaries', , Vol. 25, 2014, pp. 165-76. The date '1751' on the underside supports an early date for this group, just preceding the 'Dry Edge' group, and this model represents a key piece in the attribution of this early class of porcelain. Compare to the pug dog and two figures of musicians also from this important group, lots 57, 58 and 191 in this sale.
