The tankard would originally have had a matching cover and may have been used for hot milk. While it is not possible to state with absolute certainty that the form corresponds to the pot à boire referenced in the Sèvres archives, several examples recorded in the sale registers correspond closely with known surviving pieces. It is therefore likely that this shape is indeed that of the pot à boire. For a full discussion of the shape and an example with cover, see Caroline McCaffrey-Howarth and Rebecca Shaw, , 2021, p. 12.
Other examples are in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City () and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (. Another is in the Museo degli Argenti, Florence, published in Svend Eriksen and Geoffrey de Bellaigue, , 1987, p. 277, no. 92.
