Footnotes
Literature:
White, Mary, Living at the Whites' House, Vol. 4, 2023, p.226.
For a similar tile, see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. no. 12.49.4. This comparable tile is thought to originate from Takht-i Sulayman, a thirteenth-century Ilkhanid palace located near Tabriz.
The simurgh is a mythical bird who features prominently in Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, which tells the story of the beginnings of Persia. The use of the phoenix form to visualise simurgh demonstrates the growing Chinese influence instigated by the Mongol invasion earlier in the thirteenth century.
Some countries, e.g., the US, prohibit or restrict the purchase by its citizens (wherever located) and/or the import of certain types of works of particular origins. As a convenience to buyers, Bonhams has marked with the symbol R all lots of Iranian (Persian), Syrian or Afghan origin. It is each buyer's responsibility to ensure that they do not bid on or import a lot in contravention of the sanctions or trade embargoes that apply to them.
