This most distinctive teapot shape may be derived from silver or perhaps even Staffordshire saltglaze. A similar example from the A J Smith Collection is illustrated by Simon Spero, Lund's Bristol and Early Worcester Porcelain, 2006, p.177, pl.85. For a slightly larger version decorated in underglaze blue, see lot 132 in this sale. Whilst clearly from slightly different moulds, it is interesting to note that the difference in the two dividing 'supports' in the moulding of the lobed panels on each side of the teapot is a feature shared by both examples. However, the characteristic curved spout is not a feature of the blue and white examples, which follow the Chinese model.
