Footnotes
Provenance
Simon Spero exhibition, 2012, no. 9
The crisply moulded detail of the chinoiserie landscapes relate to contemporary 'Wigornia' type creamboats, see lots 104 and 181 in this sale. The manner in which the rockwork is picked out is in the tradition of Staffordshire saltglaze stoneware, epitomised by the bright washes of pink, green, turquoise and yellow. See the teapot illustrated by Diana Edwards, White Salt-Glazed Stoneware of the British Isles, 2005, p. 133, col. pl. 109.
A similar creamboat painted in a slightly darker palette was sold by Bonhams on 12 November 2014, lot 91. The moulded scenes are identical but the painter of the present lot has picked out the tiny ship sailing by the shore, which is not featured on the other example.
