Étienne-Jean Chabry fils was active at the factory from 1764-87 as a painter of figures, flowers and patterns. See Peters, Vol I, p. 30.
Although Étienne-Jean Chabry worked as a porcelain painter at the Sèvres porcelain manufactory for more than twenty years, he remained one of the lowest paid painters for his genre of work which mainly consisted of painting cherubs, children, and rustic or pastoral scenes. Chabry left the factory, perhaps discouraged by his small salary, and set himself up as a grocer in the village of Sèvres.
The American collectors Fred and Elizabeth "Mimi" Stafford lived in Paris for 15 years, before moving to her native New Orleans and subsequently settling in New York. They acquired objects from all the best dealers of the day, such as Rosenberg and Stiebel, René Weiller, Samy Chalom, Kraemer and Bensimon, while many pieces came from illustrious collections. Their collection of impressionist paintings was world-renowned, and they purchased several pieces directly from artists. One such purchase was a rare and avant-garde Brancusi sculpture, La jeune fille sophistiquée (Portrait de Nancy Cunard) acquired directly from the artist in 1955. It set a new auction record for the artist when it sold at Christie's Impressionist and Modern Art evening sale in May 2018 in New York. The larger part of Elizabeth Stafford's collection of Old Masters and decorative arts, including Sèvres porcelain, was also sold at Christie's in New York, 1 November 2018, whereas a secondary part went through the local auctioneers Millea Bros in New Jersey.
