Preface
Porcelain is both an invention and a source of pride for China. Since the Tang Dynasty, and throughout the
Song,Yuan,Ming, and Qing Dynasties, porcelain remained one of Chinas principal exports for over 1300
years, cherished by people around the world. Carried abroad via the land and maritime Silk Roads, it
disseminated Chinese craftsmanship, artistic styles, and aesthetic ideals across continents, serving as a vital
cultural bridge through which China engaged with the world and the world came to understand China.
Armorial porcelain decorated with coats of arms represents a special category of export porcelain,
135 examples of 18th -19th century Chinese armorial porcelain from the collection of Tianjin Museum, this
exhibition illuminates the mechanisms and dynamics of material culture transmission in the process of early
globalization, bearing witness to the cultural interweaving of China and the West along the Silk Roads.
