A pair of finely modelled horses, each standing with its head gracefully turned backwards. Both are fitted with harness, ornamental trappings, and saddles, the saddle cloths decorated in underglaze cobalt blue.
Horses occupy a prominent place in Chinese art and have long been admired as potent symbols of strength, speed, perseverance, and freedom. From the celebrated Tang dynasty horses to the porcelain sculptures of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the horse remained a favoured artistic subject. A pair of horses further symbolises harmony, balance, and the wish for continued success and advancement.
