The present Buddha is depicted in the Nirmanakaya form, wearing monastic robes that fall in natural, flowing folds. Its broad shoulders, well-defined edges, and monumental scale reflect the influence of Himalayan Buddhist art on Chinese sculpture. From Araniko’s introduction of Nepalese artistic traditions to the Yuan court to Gonbujab’s translation of the Sutra on the Measurements of Buddha Statues (《佛說造像度量經》) from Tibetan into Chinese during the Qing dynasty, these traditions helped shape Buddhist image making in China. The text served as an important guide for sculptural production, and its influence extended beyond the imperial palace. Although the present statue bears no reign mark, its large size, fine workmanship, and distinctive iconography make it a noteworthy example of Qing Buddhist sculpture.
The statue’s iconography distinguishes it from the more commonly represented Amitayus, the Buddha of Infinite Life, typically depicted in the Sambhogakaya form wearing a jewelled crown. Amitayus was frequently mentioned in Qing imperial palace records, reflecting the emperors’ and empress dowagers’ aspirations for longevity. By contrast, the present Amitabha image represents a comparatively rare form within Qing Buddhist sculpture.
Beyond the imperial court, Pure Land Buddhism flourished during the Qing dynasty, with Buddha Amitabha being one of the central figures of worshipping. Recitation of the Buddha’s name, nanwu emituofo (南無阿彌陀佛), became a widespread devotional practice among monks and laypeople alike. The statue therefore reflects the enduring place of Amitabha worship in Chinese Buddhist life.
