Provenance
Anon. sale, Sotheby's London, 7 November 1972, lot 146 (as Du Paquier);
Robert G. Vater Collection, sold Christie's London, 16 December 2021, lot 87
From a celebrated early chinoiserie service painted in iron-red, of which the teapot, waste bowl, three beakers and saucers and three teabowls and saucers were sold by Christie's London, 28 June 1976, lots 138-143, and two other beakers and saucers were sold by Sotheby's London, 7 November 1972, lots 145 and 146 (the former subsequently in the Arnhold Collection, New York). An additional teabowl was sold at Christie's London, 5 July 2004, lot 13. Höroldt is recorded as having decorated a service in red as early as 1720 (U. Pietsch, Johann Gregorius Höroldt 1696-1775 und die Meissener Porzellan-Malerei, 1996, p. 38), though the present example can be dated to around 1723 thanks to the K.P.M. mark on the teapot. Several pieces from the service including the present lot were exhibited in Dresden in 1996 (Pietsch, , nos. 7-12), when the decoration was attributed in part to Höroldt himself. A beaker and saucer and a teabowl and saucer are in the Carabelli Collection (U. Pietsch, Frühes Meissener Porzellan, 2000, nos. 2-3). A beaker and saucer from the service was sold from the Hoffmeister Collection at Bonhams London, 25 November 2009, lot 2, and again from the Marouf Collection, 2 May 2013, lot 7. A teabowl and saucer from the service was also sold by Bonhams from the Hoffmeister Collection, 26 May 2010, lot 2; the waste bowl was sold from a private European collection at Bonhams London, 22 July 2020, lot 25; the teapot, formerly in the Renate and Tono Dreßen Collection, was sold at Bonhams Paris from a Private Asian Collection of Early Meissen Porcelain, 22 April 2026, lot 49.
