款識：
赤橙黃綠青藍紫，誰持彩練當空舞？雨後復斜陽，關山陣陣蒼。當年鏖戰急，彈洞前村壁。裝點此關山，今朝更好看。
一九六五年十一月廿四日。第一次試畫毛主席〈菩薩蠻•大柏地〉詞意於北京。可染。
鈐印：「可染」、「日新」、「傳統今朝」。

註：本幅題具體創作日期「一九六五年十一月廿四日」，當時已陰霾密佈，正值風雨來臨前夕。翌年初，畫家也被剝奪創作權利，捲入「文革」運動中。畫上又題曰「第一次試畫毛主席〈大柏地•菩薩蠻〉詞意」，由於政治風潮突湧，這次「試畫」後就無以再續創作，更談不上具「採一鍊十」之法，也無復如〈萬山紅遍〉般多次造稿！故此，本幅應是畫家在「文革」前夕筆下所出最後的作品之一，亦屬鮮見採〈大柏地•菩薩蠻〉詞意入畫之作！
毛澤東這首作品填於一九三三年夏。當時，他在江西瑞金主持中央政府工作，在寧都進行視察工作回返途中，經過距瑞金縣城北六十里的小鎮大柏地。回想一九二九年與朱德率紅軍在此地設伏擊潰尾隨追擊的敵人，觸景生情，遂留下此作。當時，他飽受排擠，被迫離開軍事領導位置，故重踏當年取勝之地，別有一番感慨。詞中仍見意氣昂揚，對革命前景滿懷樂觀，故取「今朝更好看」作結！
由於詞意樂觀中見抒情，畫家即緊扣此旨，捨却千里行軍、紅旗招展或關山遠隔的描寫，也揚棄重彩濃墨的設色法，反而突出抒懷輕盈的一面。畫中又見斜陽裝點下的「關山」，山沿、屋脊、樹杪都披蓋著斜陽的灑照，山巒密蔭經雨水洗刷，烟塵滌盡，更呈蒼翠鬱綠，一片清新氣象。這種雨後斜陽的處理手法，在畫家六十年代中期創作中已運用嫻熟，本幅再一次引証了渾然融合的效果，畫面上方淡抹一道彩練，如拱橋橫越天際，輕柔淺薄中仍見層次隱現。虹影既對應了詞中起首之句意，與「雨後斜陽」也成為點綴畫面色調的諧協組合！
