With impeccably well-matched top panels, the present table is a particularly rare and magnificent example of an 18th-century table, distinguished by its elegant proportions, crisp architectural silhouette and unusual -cloud decoration. The scarcity of fine by the mid-Qing period, when supplies were increasingly limited and largely reserved for the imperial court and its regional workshops, further underscores the rarity of a table of the present quality.
The form originated in northern China as a practical furnishing for the , the heated brick platform traditionally used during the harsh northern winters, where low tables such as this were placed for writing, dining and other daily activities. Despite its conventional designation, such tables were not restricted to the ; related low tables were also used on the (榻), the freestanding couch widely employed in southern China. Their dimensions and proportions varied considerably according to period, region and function. The present table's clean silhouette derives from the Ming dynasty (四面平) classical construction, whose balanced proportions and architectural clarity continued to influence later Qing furniture.
The -cloud motif seen here, with stylized scrolls applied to the corners and centered along the apron, is comparatively unusual among tables, although related examples are recorded in distinguished collections. Compare, for example, a narrow with related ruyi-cloud decoration in the prominent Wang Shixiang Collection, illustrated in Wang Shixiang, , Hong Kong, 1990, pl. B23; a set of 18th century stools with similar cloud motif originally from the Prince Gong and J. M. Hu Collection, which was sold at Christie's New York, 24 Mar 2023, lot 1159; and another hardwood stand, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 4 April 2016, lot 2844.
For its Ming precedent, compare a table of similarly restrained form, decorated with a related cloud motif, from the collection of Chen Shijia, illustrated in , pl. B6.
