If a condition report is provided to assist you with assessing the condition of the lot, it is for guidance purposes only. Such condition report may not refer to all faults, restoration, alterations, or adaptations because Sotheby's is not a professional conservator or restorer but rather a condition report is a statement of subjective, qualified opinion genuinely held by Sotheby's. For these reasons, any such condition report is not an alternative to taking your own professional advice regarding the condition of the lot. Prospective buyers should also refer to the Guide for Buyers at Auction which includes important notices concerning the type of property in this sale.

说明:The present vase is a fine example of the distinctive marbled wares produced during the Tang dynasty. Known in Chinese as jiao tai, the technique involved twisting and kneading together differently coloured clays to create irregular swirling patterns, the effect here enhanced by a transparent glaze. Fragments of such wares have been excavated at the Gongxian kilns at Huangye, Henan province, illustrated in Three-Colour Glazed Pottery Kilns of the Tang Dynasty at Huangye, Beijing, 2000, pl. 71, no. 9, as well as at the Liquanfang kilns in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, published in The Kiln Site of Tricolor-Glazed Pottery at Liquanfang in Chang'an Capital City of Tang Dynasty, Beijing, 2008, pl. 39, attesting to the production of marbled wares during the period.
Marbled wares were produced in a variety of forms, including bowls, jars and pillows, but vases appear to be particularly rare. For a Tang vessel of closely related form, compare a straw-glazed stoneware bottle vase, similarly modelled with a bulbous body rising to a tall, slender neck with a flared mouth, formerly in the Florence and Herbert Irving Collection, sold at Christie’s New York, 21st March 2019, lot 1229.
