The long-bearded senior wearing a voluminous ensemble and cradling a toddler on his back, the boy wearing an open-crotch pants revealing the buttocks, the finely detailed facial features with a gentle, content expression, the surface finely polished throughout, an oval mark carved on the back of the left sleeve.

Zhu Zichang (1876-1934), from Yongjia, present day Wenzhou in Zhejiang province, was well-known for his boxwood carvings. His works were recognized internationally. Compare the carved boxwood figure of an old man sold at Sotheby's Paris, 23 June 2016, lot 54.
