说明:While the spiritual significance of designs from the neolithic Liangzhu culture remain shrouded in mystery, the surmounting of a monstrous form by the human appears to have been among the most important and beloved, most famously typified by the flat decoration found on the largest cong in Tomb 12 at Fanshan in Yuhang (see Gu Fang, The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China, vol. 8 Zhejiang, Beijing, 2005, pp 70-71).
This dramatic cosmological schema is here applied to the corners of the bead in four registers as typical of jade cong of the period and cong-style beadwork. Compare very closely related beads depicting humans surmounting demons preserved in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, included in Teng Shu-P’ing, Neolithic Jades in the Collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1992, cat. nos 28-35, all with designs in less distinct condition than the present; a set of three human-mask beads uncovered from Tomb 20 at Fanshan included in Liangzhu yu gudai Zhongguo. Yuqi xianshi de wuqian nian wenming [Liangzhu and ancient China. 5000 years of culture revealed in jade], Beijing, 2019, p. 152; three more from Tomb 12, ibid., p. 254; a bead sold from the Dongxi Collection at Christie’s New York, 17th March 2016, lot 905; and two beads from the Lantien Shanfang Collection sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 7th May 2025, lot 3744.
