Each table has a top panel set within a square frame with a beaded edge, above a narrow plain waist. The aprons and spandrels are carved with phoenixes amidst scrolling clouds, all raised on thick, square-section legs with beaded edges, terminating in scroll-form feet. The wood of one table has an attractive grain and warm satin tone, while the other is of a deep purple colour.
Large-scale furniture constructed as matching pairs in zitan is exceptionally rare, reflecting the considerable expense associated with its production. By the early Qing period, zitan had become one of the most costly timbers available, owing to the severe depletion of mature trees caused by extensive logging during the Ming Dynasty. This scarcity was exacerbated by the species' exceptionally slow growth rate, as zitan trees require several centuries to reach a size suitable for furniture production.
Although the species was found in the southern Chinese provinces of Yunnan, Guangdong, and Guangxi, a substantial proportion of the timber used for high-quality furniture was imported from Southeast Asia. As a precious imported material, zitan was subject to strict regulation within the imperial workshops, where its acquisition, allocation, and use were closely monitored and carefully controlled.
**Footnote**
*Please note: prospective purchasers are advised that several countries prohibit the importation of property containing materials from endangered species, including but not limited to coral, ivory and tortoiseshell as well as certain hardwoods such as huanghuali and zitan. Accordingly, prospective purchasers should familiarize themselves with relevant customs regulations prior to bidding if they intend to import this lot into another country outside of the EU.
