The design of the present table is modelled after demountable prototypes featuring detachable legs, ingeniously conceived to facilitate easy disassembly and transport. Interestingly, a select group of tables, including the present lot, were constructed with fixed legs that were deliberately carved to simulate their detachable counterparts. This fascination with artifice and visual illusion was highly fashionable across the decorative arts during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Compare an eighteenth-century square fixed-leg 'demountable' table of similar proportions, also reduced in height, sold at Christie’s New York, 7th-24th July 2020, lot 81.
此桌仿可拆卸式家具之制，原設計乃為方便拆解及搬運。然亦有少數作例，包括本拍品在內，實為固定腿足，卻刻意雕琢以仿效可拆卸之貌。此類巧思與錯覺藝術於十七及十八世紀之裝飾藝術中蔚然成風。
比較一十八世紀方桌例，比例相近，同為固定腿足仿可拆卸式，且高度曾遭改短，售於紐約佳士得2020年7月7至24日，編號81。
