说明：The present vase represents an usual, and likely early, piece of Yongzheng period (1723-1735) imperial porcelain, featuring the painterly style and flamboyant shape more familiar in the Kangxi period (1662-1722) and earlier Transitional period.
The inscription on the present vase, attributes its production to the Sanwei (lit. 'Three Fears') Hall, a monicker for the Lu family who served as local officials for the Yongzheng court. Stationed in the Jiangning region (modern-day Nanjing, Anhui and Shanghai), the Sanwei were founded by Lu Wen who identified three virtues by which his family should live: 'fear the dignity of heaven, fear the anger of earth, and fear the truth of heart.'
Four-character reign marks like the present are rare. Compare a meiping of closely related Yongzheng four-character mark and of period preserved in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Blue and White Porcelain with Underglazed Red (III), Hong Kong, 2000, pl. 74, of closely related painterly blue and white painting style depicting birds on a withered branch.
