说明:During the Ming dynasty, auspicious symbolism flourished across decorative arts, including lacquerware, textiles, and porcelain. The combination of the magpie and prunus forms a visual pun for the phrase xishang meishao, which translates to "may happiness reach up to your eyebrows" or endless joy.
Compare with a closely related cinnabar lacquer brush and holder dated to the Xuande period but decorated with ‘peony’, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, The Four Treasures of the Study – Inksticks and Writing Brushes, Hong Kong, 2005, p. 135, no. 116., See also a cinnabar lacquer ‘peony’ brush and cover, 15th century, sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 3rd December 2021, lot 2983.
