Carved from Shoushan stone of natural form, the seal has a warm, softly colored surface and is decorated with shallow-carved motifs following the contours of the stone. The seal face is inscribed in seal script "Pinghu Moshi Cuncaolu kaocang shuhua yin" (平湖莫氏寸草廬考藏書畫印), identifying it as a connoisseurship and collection seal for paintings and calligraphy associated with the Mo family of Pinghu and their studio, Cuncaolu. One side is inscribed "On the third day of the fifth month of the bingchen year, made by Xu Xingzhou of Wumen," corresponding to 1916; another side bears the inscription "Two days before the full moon of the seventh month of the jisi year, for Bonian's correction."
Xu Xingzhou, also known as Xu Xinzhou (1853-1925), was a native of Wuxian, Jiangsu, a disciple of Wu Changshuo, and a noted seal carver.
