Chakrasamvara and his consort Vajravarahi are shown in yab-yum, an embrace that embodies the tantric Buddhist ideal of enlightenment through the union of wisdom and compassion. The complex composition, with its multiple arms, attributes, and finely articulated details, required considerable technical skill to execute at this small scale.
A closely comparable gilt-copper alloy figure of Vajrabhairava, likewise distinguished by its jewel-like finish and finely rendered naturalistic details, was sold at Christie's, New York, 19 March 2012, lot 112, formerly in the Doris Wiener collection. Also compare the treatment of Vajravarahi's girdle and the posture of the prostrate figures with those of a closely related Chakrasamvara, dated 1576, published in von Schroeder, , 1981, pp. 376-7, no. 100D.
