Vajrapani is the protector of Vajrayana Buddhism and its followers and personifies the dynamic power of the Buddha's teachings. He stands in a warrior pose, wearing an animal skin and windswept sash. His right hand is raised, while his left displays the karana mudra, the gesture of warding off harmful forces and dispelling obstacles.
Engraved on the underside of the base is a vajra, the principal attribute of Vajrapani and a symbol of indestructible wisdom and spiritual power. His dwarfish appearance recalls the yaksha traditions of early Indian Buddhism.
Small and readily portable, devotional images of this type could have served as personal objects of worship. A related circa 13th-century tsa-tsa of Khroda Vajrapani (HAR 15039).
