A stem cup raised on a tall foot, the foot with a slightly thickened rim and a further moulded swelling at the centre of the stem, supporting the rounded-sided cup above. The vessel is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with floral scrolls, while the stem is painted with stylised pendent leaf motifs. The interior is painted with a peach spray.
The stem cup (gaozu bei, 高足杯), also known as a “horseback cup” (mashang bei, 马上杯), first appeared during the Yuan dynasty. Its slender, elongated stem, often resembling a bamboo node, and its association with drinking wine on horseback, reflect its connection with Mongol culture. The form continued to be produced during the Ming and Qing dynasties, though with significant modifications in shape and proportion.
