Geese on a Riverbank
Horizontal handscroll, ink and color on silk, signed and dated Shaosheng yihai siyue fufeng Ma Ben bi with an additional inscription dated renchen and signed Yubi with two calligrapher's seals, and a total of twenty-two collector's seals, mounted with an additional titleslip in clerical script dated Wanli jihai (1599) signed Zhu Zhifan with two calligrapher's seals, and two colophons, ink on paper with three calligrapher's seals and two collector's seals.

The composition and dimensions of the present lot are reminiscent of those of the handscroll A Hundred Geese, dated to the Yuan dynasty, in the collection of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, accession number 50.1455, as well as another handscroll, The Hundred Geese, in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art, which likewise bears a signature of Ma Ben and collector's seals of Wu Yuanhui (active 1821-1865).

題簽二：宋馬賁畫羣雁圖卷。萬曆乙亥春仲，朱之藩題。鈐印：朱之蕃印、元介
畫心跋：稻滿秋田水滿汀，黃蘆風急度寒聲。太平江海無繒繳，不用呼奴夜打更。壬辰仲夏，御題。
鈐印：得佳趣、乾隆宸翰
尾跋一：年去年來年複年，帛書曾達茂陵前。影連薊北月橫塞，聲斷江南霜滿天。（雨）暗蘆花愁夜渚，露香菰米下秋田。平生千裡與萬裡，塵世網羅空自懸。（補「雨」字）至正癸未初春，吳人周砥照題。鈐印：周砥之印
尾跋二：馬賁，河中人，長於小景，作百雁、百猿、百馬、百鹿、百羊等圖，雖極繁夥，而位置不亂。此卷畫爲群雁引吭將鳴，聯翼欲起；或聚而宿，或旅而棲，厥狀各殊，其致甚適，不愧爲一代所宗也。昢至正己亥春正月，東海茅毅跋。鈐印：茅子剛、東海遺老

本品之構圖佈局與尺幅規格，皆與波士頓美術館所藏元代〈百雁圖〉手卷（館藏編號50.1455）相仿，亦與檀香山藝術博物館所藏〈百雁圖〉頗為相近，該卷亦署馬賁款，並鈐有相同的伍元蕙（活躍於1821–1865年間）藏印多枚。
