In the artist's inscription, Xie Zhiliu states he was inspired by a Zhang Daqian composition in his own collection when he created this painting. In the 1930's and 1940's, the two artists were close, traveling together to Dunhuang in 1942, a pivotal time in Zhang Daqian's career. Their relationship is further evinced by the several collaborative paintings they created together. When this painting was done in the early 1960's, the two friends had been separated for more than a decade. The two figures painted--one holding a stick and gazing into the distance, the other with his head bowed in contemplation, clutching a sheet of paper or a book--could well represent an imaginary self-portrait of the artist alongside his mentor, Zhang Daqian.

謝稚柳於畫中題識自述，「篋中有爰兄此作，略取蒼渾」，此作乃受其珍藏的張大千畫作啟發而繪。二十世紀三十至四年代間，張謝二人過從甚密，一九四二年更同赴敦煌，而此行對張大千藝術生涯至關重要。二人亦曾數度聯筆合作，足見情誼深厚。及至六十年代初繪就此畫時，二人已分離逾十載。畫中兩位高士，峨冠博帶，一持杖遠眺，一低首凝思，手持書卷或紙箋，或可視為謝稚柳寄託想像之自寫像，與其藝壇摯友兼前輩張大千並處於圖中，寓懷舊念遠之思。
