The present subject, one of Tsumetomi's greatest prints, depicts one of the most beloved characters of the Kabuki stage. A young man rescues a wounded heron, nurses it back to health, and sets it free. Soon after, a mysterious young, beautiful maiden appears. The young man falls in love, and they marry. She is a skilled weaver of silk, but she warns her husband never to look in on her as she weaves. His curiosity gets the better of him, and he looks into the room, only to see a heron at the loom. As she becomes a woman for the last time, she tells him how happy she has been, but she now must fly away, leaving him forever.
