款識：
七國雄雌猶未分，攻城殺將何紛紛。秦兵益圍邯鄲急，魏王不救平原君。公子為嬴停駟馬，執轡愈恭意愈下。亥為屠肆鼓刀人，嬴乃夷門抱關者。非但忼慨獻奇謀，意氣兼將身命酬。向風刎頸送公子，七十老翁何所求。
書贈文典壯士。章炳麟。
鈐印：「炳麟長壽」、「太炎六十三歲以後書」。
上款：「文典」即著名國學家劉文典（1889-1958），字舒雅，安徽合肥人，一九〇七年入同盟會，後負笈日本，投章炳麟門下，辛亥革命後返滬，任職〈民立報〉，鼓吹民主，二次革命後，隨孫中山東渡日本，並任其祕書，退身政界後受聘北京大學，兼任〈新青年〉英文編輯、翻譯，一九二六年受命創建安徽大學並任校長，後歷任清華大學、西南聯大教職。
劉文典有「狂士」之稱，一九二八年十一月，安徽大學爆發學潮，恰逢蔣介石視察當地，劉氏於會面期間出言頂撞、觸怒層峰，遭拘七日，辭職離皖。事後東行探望章炳麟，得乃師書聯「疾惡真推禰正平」，比之三國時期擊鼓罵曹之狂士禰衡，蓋章氏曾因大鬧袁世凱總統府遭囚禁，對弟子遭遇感同身受。此幅鈐「太炎六十三歲以後書」，知作於一九三〇至三六年間，書王維〈夷門歌〉，詠戰國隱士侯嬴獻策救趙、慷慨捐軀，並題「壯士」贈愛徒，慰勉之情溢於筆端。
