Vajradhara is the primordial buddha, the ultimate source of all wisdom and compassion. He crosses his wrists before his heart in vajrahumkara mudra, in which vajra and ghanta unite, symbolising the conjunction of method and insight required to realise the dharmakaya, his true and formless nature. The two implements reappear at his shoulders on lotus blossoms.
He sits in the adamantine posture (vajraparyankasana) upon a high lotus throne whose slim inner petals are set against a broader outer register, each row finely incised at the edge, a treatment characteristic of 16th-century casting. The figure's full, smooth brow, arrangement of jewellery, and balanced proportions invite comparison with a gilt-bronze Vajradhara from the Alan Robert Naftali Collection, sold at Bonhams, San Francisco, 18 June 2007, lot 6163. Compare also a Vajradhara (HAR 8499) and an Amitayus (HAR 8511) from the Collection of Dzamtang Tsangwa Monastery.
