Each vessel exquisitely carved as compressed ovoid bowls with a musical stone suspending a pierced xi character, 'happiness', over the mouth rim forming a bridge across the top and terminating in tassels at the spout, flanked by a pair of handles designed with lotus blossoms and lingzhi, all raised on four short feet, the stone of semi-translucent white tone with a few russet patches.
Each 12.5cm (4 7/8in) wide. (2).

The musical chime (磬 qing), traditionally associated with ritual music, harmony, and moral order, is here suspended from the character 喜 (xi, 'happiness'). Together they form a visual rebus for 喜慶 (), meaning 'celebration' or 'joyous occasion'. When presented as a pair, the motif may further allude to 雙喜 (, 'double happiness'), an auspicious concept closely associated with marriage and matrimonial felicity. Therefore, vessels like the present lot were deemed very suitable as prestigious gifts at wedding, and were decorated with auspicious motifs that conferred blessings and good wishes upon the owners.
See a very similar white jade water coup with a single character, Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in the , p.91, no.80. Another example was included in the 45th Anniversary Exhibition of the Min Chiu Society, , Hong Kong, 2005, cat.no. 218.
Compare with a single similar white jade water coupe, 18th century, illustrated by R.Kleiner, , Hong Kong, 1996, no.105, which was later sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 November 2006, lot 1361. Compare another similar example with handles carved with lotus and fungus, Qianlong, sold at Sotheby's London, 7 November 2007, lot 385.
玉質白色，溫潤滋肥。洗池呈變形海棠式，一端有出水口，口沿一側雕一磬以綬帶與一喜字結相連成為提梁，綬帶尾部對稱分別垂於出水口兩側。雙耳飾靈芝蓮紋，洗下承四矮足。磬、「喜」字及綬帶巧妙雕琢相連，具有「喜慶連連」的吉祥寓意，成對出現，寓意「雙喜」，有婚嫁美滿之祝願，故此類水丞甚宜作為婚慶雅禮，以祥瑞紋飾寄寓福澤佳期。
清宮舊藏一件清代白玉雙獸耳喜慶水丞，形制與本品類近，著錄於《故宮博物院藏品大系：玉器編：9》，頁91，編號80；另有一例曾展於敏求精舍四十五週年紀念展《千祥雲集：中國吉祥圖案文物》，香港，2005年，編號218。
