The horseshoe-back armchair, distinguished by its gracefully sweeping crestrail and out-turned hooks, is one of the classic forms of Chinese seating furniture. While the basic form is well known, the present chair is distinguished by the elegant, elongated spandrels flanking the vertical posts above the seat. This subtle detail serves to emphasise the refined curve of the crestrail and arms. The design is further elevated by the tripartite backsplat, which showcases the richly figured huanghuali grain, contrasting beautifully with the delicately carved openwork ruyi-head panel.
A pair of huanghuali horseshoe-back armchairs with plain splats, similarly fitted with elongated spandrels, is illustrated in Grace Wu Bruce, Ming Furniture Through My Eyes, Beijing, 2015, p. 101.
For a comprehensive discussion of this classic chair form, see Robert H. Ellsworth, Chinese Furniture: Hardwood Examples of the Ming and Early Ch'ing Dynasty, New York, 1971, pp. 86-87; and Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, Hong Kong, 1990, pp. 43-45.
