Footnotes
宋 玉雕兔形墜飾
In Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, Jessica Rawson discusses how jade carvings of rabbits or hares became favorable during the Song period perhaps because of their association with the moon, where they were said to pound the elixir of immortality.
Compare a rabbit carving with its head bent over its paws, recorded in ibid., p.365, fig. 26:9, which was later sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 9 Octover 2022, The Personal Collection of the late Sir Joseph Hotung: Part 1, lot 102; another jade rabbit toggle similarly carved with its head raised, is in the collection of Palace Museum, Taipei, museum no. 故玉000726N000000000.
