Literature:
White, Mary, Living at the Whites' House, Vol.4, 2023, p.232
Under Ottoman sultan Süleiman I (r.1520-1566), the Dome of the Rock underwent a major restoration between 1545-1552 seeing the replacement of the exterior mosaics with Iznik tiles. Both underglaze-painted and cuerda seca varieties were made on site and were crafted by Tabrizi artisans. Following this project, it is thought the potters then travelled to Syria where the Dome of the Rock patterns were diversified and became more varied, perhaps explaining the derivative style we see on the second tile. For further discussion and examples, see Venetia Porter, Islamic Tiles, 1999, pp. 103-104.
Some countries, e.g., the US, prohibit or restrict the purchase by its citizens (wherever located) and/or the import of certain types of works of particular origins. As a convenience to buyers, Bonhams has marked with the symbol R all lots of Iranian (Persian), Syrian or Afghan origin. It is each buyer's responsibility to ensure that they do not bid on or import a lot in contravention of the sanctions or trade embargoes that apply to them.
