Footnotes
Budai Heshang was one of several blanc-de-chine models exported to Europe, some of which were drawn from Buddhism while others were taken from Taoism. Several of these were copied in Staffordshire earthenware and in saltglaze stoneware. The stoneware examples were typically left in the white, making the present lot one of the rarer variations. A white saltglaze example from the Henry H Weldon Collection is illustrated by Leslie B Grigsby, English Pottery, 1990, p.328, no.184 and again alongside an earthenware example on p.472, no.302. Another is illustrated by Mary White, People at the Whites' House, 2024, p.124, fig.c. An example with similar colouring to the present lot was sold by Christie's on 19 May 1980, lot 7.
