The landscape, a hanging scroll, ink and color on paper, inscribed by the artist and dated yihai (1815), and signed Mansheng Chen Hongshou with two artist seals; together with a calligraphy couplet, mounted, ink on paper, signed Chen Hongshou with two artist's seals.

Landscape paintings by Chen Hongshou are exceedingly rare. Another of his surviving landscapes, also executed in the boneless manner, painted four years before the present lot, was formerly in the King-Kwei Collection of J.D. Chen (Chen Rentao, 1906-1968) and was offered at Christie's Hong Kong, Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy, 26 November 2012, lot 876.
