Potted and glazed to fit effortlessly in the hand, this striking bowl epitomises the aesthetic and literati spirit of the Song dynasty. Its simple yet robust form complemented by an unctuous glaze would have greatly appealed to the literati and nobility of the time due to its understated aesthetics and timeless beauty.
Compare a pair of closely related bowls unearthed from the tomb of Li Jurou, Jin dynasty, in the Shaanxi Archaeological Museum, Xi'an, illustrated in 'Shaanxi xian jindai lijurou fajue jianbao', , vol.2, 2017, pl.1.
