Tianqi/Chongzhen
The square box with straight sides rising from a shaped foot, the exterior painted with orchids, the slightly domed cover decorated with a scholar seated at his desk beside a brushpot, before a screen, a plantain leaf seen through the window beyond, a candle burning nearby indicating a night-time scene. 8cm (3 1/8in) square. See two related blue and white boxes and covers with similarly rendered grasses, Wanli, illustrated in Transitional Wares and Their Forerunners, Hong Kong, 1981, p.71, no.21.
Such imagery, rendered solely in line with no shading or tonal modelling, was likely inspired by the woodblock-printed illustrations accompanying popular novels and theatrical publications.
