说明:The seven grasses of autumn (aki no nanakusa): from the right, white bush clover (hagi) blossoms vie with the large leaves of red-blossoming kudzu vine (kuzu) and a spray of pale purple flowers of long-stemmed thoroughwort (fujibakama); morning glories and pink dianthus occupy the lower centre beside yellow patrinia (ominaeshi) and red-plumed Japanese pampas grass (susuki). The blue of the morning glories is rendered in sparkling ultramarine gunjo pigment, while the leaves of the bush clover are finely worked in tarashikomi (‘dripped in’ pigment over a still-wet surface).
The convention of the seven autumn flowers originates from a pair of poems by Yamanoue no Okura (circa 660-733) in the Man'yoshu [lit. Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves]:
Flowers blossoming in autumn fields –
when I count them on my fingers
they number seven.
The flowers of bush clover,
eulalia, arrowroot,
pink dianthus, patrinia,
also thoroughwort,
and morning faces flower.¹

Kiitsu was the foremost pupil of Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1824) [see Lot 2117]. He used the artistic name Kaikai from his late thirties into his forties during the Tenpo era (1830-44), a period in which he produced several accomplished works balancing naturalistic observation with decorative effect. The present painting is accompanied by a box bearing the artist's own inscription. The wrapping cloth bears a dated inscription Tenpo jugo kinoe tatsu toshi haru [spring of 1844] written by the scroll's owner, Tokuko. The work was formerly in the collection of the Manno Art Museum, Osaka.
