The technique of cloisonné enamel was introduced to China during the 14th century and reached its artistic maturity in the early 15th century. The present incense burner exhibits distinct early characteristics which closely align it with the earlier prototypes. Notably, the more naturalistic depiction of the vines and floral scrolls, the use of a variegated green mixture highlighted by opaque cinnabar, and the semi-translucent purple set this piece apart from later examples.
Compare, for instance, the treatment of the grapevine on a cloisonné enamel , Yuan dynasty, from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in the , vol.1, Beijing, 2011, no.1, as well as the floral scroll on the underside of another Yuan dynasty tripod incense burner decorated with lotus, ibid., no.10.
The production of cloisonné enamel incense burners of this motif and form continued into the Ming dynasty. Several early Ming dynasty examples from the Qing Court Collection are illustrated ibid., nos.39-45. The arrangement of the grapevines on one of them is closely comparable to the present example, but the depiction appears slightly more stylised (no.40).
Compare also a similar Ming dynasty incense burner, sold at Sotheby's London, 6 April 1976, lot 23, and entered the Dr. & Mrs. Hu Shih-chang Collection; and another, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 May 2006, lot 1553 (part lot).
