The simple, austere lines of this cabinet create a sense of solidity and strength. The rectangular metalwork and hinges emphasise the geometry of the form, while the unadorned surfaces perfectly showcase the rich, attractive grain of the huanghuali wood.
Compare a huanghuali square-corner cabinet featuring bookmatched panel doors and a carved, moulded apron joining the legs, illustrated by Gustav Ecke in Chinese Domestic Furniture, Vermont and Tokyo, 1962, pl. 131, no. 104. A further related huanghuali square-corner cabinet of variant proportions and with a carved cusped apron was sold at Christie’s New York, 25th September 2020, lot 1653.
