峽勢入朝天，江魚薦饌鮮。盤空鑿明月，馳想挾飛仙。青靄人家住，丹霄客夢懸。龍門思禮佛，椎斷一愴然。
嘉陵江明月峽，蜀江之有峽，自此始也。
己卯除夕，若飛道長兄兩教，弟張爰。

上款：「若飛」即馮若飛，政界大老張群袐書，在其幕僚中文才出眾。三十年代初，大千即經其引薦，結識甫主政上海的張群。抗戰期間，二人皆避兵居蜀，交往更為密切，與其他文藝界人士往來亦頻，獲贈書畫頗豐。他曾以「富可敵國、貧無立錐」形容大千對書畫收藏之痴迷珍愛，日後被藝術界引為美談！
註：一九三九年五月下旬，大千與張目寒、黃君璧同游川北，足迹遍歷當地名勝古迹、雄關險隘。此行為畫家日後創作積累了豐富素材，甫還青城即寫〈蜀山秦樹卷〉記錄此行遊踪，作為張目寒四十整壽之賀禮。
本幅寫於「己卯除夕」，已踏入一九四○年的二月七日。入畫之明月峽位於廣元縣城北之朝天鎮，此乃劍門蜀道之始與咽喉要塞，峽長約兩公里，山險水急，風景卻具清幽之趣，大千譽謂「嘉陵江最幽勝處」。
畫取俯瞰視角，兩岸奇巖夾峙，在高處幾近相接，為強化峽江之險絕，大千將畫幅極盡收窄，如此細長之構圖，於其畫中稀見。懸崖半腰開鑿棧道，下臨激流，湍行之篷船正逼近前方斜亙巨巖，加劇險情。而乘滑竿之行旅與渡船人，皆神態安詳，於如此危境，竟生出些許悠然。
大千極注重山體結構之描繪，直皴與斧劈參合運用，狀寫石壁崚嶒質感，與實景如出一轍。青綠設色偏蒼鬱沉厚，悅目之餘，亦切合畫中主體之特質。這種處理手法同見於一九三九年的〈蜀山秦樹卷〉及〈關洛憶遊〉，而在歲除贈好友，似致賀開歲！
