Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal (1594–1651), founder of Bhutan and head of the Drukpa Kagyu school, sits at the centre of the composition on an elaborate lotus throne. He is identified by his characteristic beard, distinctive Bhutanese gomsha (pointed hat), and a ritual vase surmounted by a cintamani held in his left hand, while his right hand extends over the throne cushion. Two followers of the Shabdrung Kagyu tradition flank the throne bearing offerings. Before him stands an altar with fruit, a ritual bell, and ceremonial vessels, including a Chinese blue-and-white vessel. Surrounding the central figure are successive registers of haloed hierarchs seated on lotus thrones, emphasizing the continuity of the tradition he founded.
The harmonious palette and dense scrolling cloud and foliate motifs are consistent with Bhutanese painting of the 18th/19th century. Two further Bhutanese examples of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal were sold at Sotheby's, London, 23 July 1984, lot 119, and Bonhams, New York, 13 March 2017, lot 3040.
